Marcus+

In his teens he was one of NYC’s most sought-after studio bass guitarist. After some time – not just a studio one and not just in New York. And eventually: not just a bass guitarist. Please welcome the main star of this year's Solidarity of Arts biggest event.

Marcus Miller

Marcus Miller was born in Brooklyn in 1959. He is not too keen on drawing clear lines between music genres that he specializes in. These genres are jazz, jazz fusion, R&B and funk and to say he specializes in them is actually an understatement. For he has been influencing the way they all sound for decades now. As a thirteen-year-old he was already a good clarinet, piano and bass guitar player and he was also starting to write his own music. In 1981 he joined Miles Davis, his boyhood idol, with whom he toured for the following two years. Miller went on to produce three of Davis’ albums, including the amazing Tutu in 1986. As a bass guitarist he appears on over 400 recordings by artists as different as Elton John, Joe Sample, Mariah Carey, McCoy Tyner, Bill Withers, Billy Idol, Bryan Ferry, Frank Sinatra and LL Cool J. He is a multiple Grammy Award winner: as an author and performer (his M Squared won the Jazz Album of the Year award in 2001), and as a producer (the aforementioned Tutu, and the 1991 song Power of Love by Luther Vandross, as well as two David Sanborn albums, the 1981 Voyeur and the 1999 Inside). Marcus Miller is also known for his film scores. His music can be heard for example in Boomerang (with Eddie Murphy and Halle Berry), Siesta (Ellen Barkin), Ladies' Man (Tim Meadows) or Deliver Us From Eva (LL Cool J). Since last year's Możdżer+ Marcus has toured and performed extensively: just this May he put together and performed at a Japan Tsunami relief concert. In July he has toured Europe with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sean Jones and Sean Rickman as part of their Miles Tribute tour. Earlier he released the Marcus Miller - A night in Monte Carlo album, a taste of which we are about to get this August in Gdańsk. With musical genius Marcus Miller in such shape, Marcus+ is promising to be an evening to remember. We're in good hands.
